The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL side.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be building momentum.
Their recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
