The network's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
