Southern California Experiences Record-Breaking Heat Only One Week After Severe Winter Storm.
In the wake of heavy downpours that resulted in floodwaters across sections of the city, the City of Angels is now grappling with unusually warm conditions for this time of year.
All-Time High Temperatures
On Friday midday, the thermometer soared to 91°F (33°C) in downtown Los Angeles, per data from meteorologists. This breaks the old record for February 27th, which was 88°F (31°C) and was recorded in the previous year.
"Very warm conditions" were labeled on official charts for the region.
Public Health Alerts
Forecasters issued a warning that Friday's weather posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their advice featured:
- Staying hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Not leaving anyone unattended in a parked vehicle.
A Dramatic Reversal
This sudden spike in heat follows closely after a massive storm system that struck the area recently. That storm delivered high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to the mountains, triggering flash flood warnings for many residents.
Tragically, the severe weather also triggered a deadly avalanche in the Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Weekend Outlook
Forecasters predict cooler conditions is expected. Readings were forecast to fall to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown LA by overnight.
Several cities that reached the 90-degree mark included Woodland Hills, Long Beach, and Burbank. Additionally, Santa Maria, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Westwood were projected to see the high eighties.
In the coming days, central LA can see temperatures in the 80s, with a further cooldown expected for the start of March.
