Red Cross Accompanies Militant Group in Recovery for Remains of Israeli Hostages in Gaza

A Red Cross official stated that its representatives accompanied Hamas officials into zones of the Gaza Strip currently controlled by IDF authority to support the hunt for the bodies of individuals held captive.

Truce Terms and Hostage Bodies Handover

Under the US-brokered ceasefire, which took effect on 10 October, the group is obligated to return the bodies of all Israeli hostages as soon as possible. In exchange, Israel has consented to transfer the remains of 15 Palestinians for every Israeli body returned.

The organization has so far handed back the remains of fifteen of those held captive but zero in the last five days, as some of those bodies are thought to be in areas beyond the yellow line marking Gaza’s ceasefire.

Red Cross Role as Neutral Intermediary

“Upon the appeal of the parties, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) accompanied a party to the conflict as the group looked for the remains of the deceased individuals beyond the IDF-designated ‘yellow line’,” stated a spokesperson for the committee.

The spokesperson continued: “The parties to the hostilities established the modalities of the mission and entrusted the ICRC to serve as a neutral intermediary. The ICRC was not involved in those negotiations.”

The official further clarified: “Our team was did not participate in the search for the deceased nor does it engage in the retrieval of human remains.”

International Legal Standards and Duties

Under international humanitarian law, it is the responsibility of the sides involved in a hostilities to locate, gather, and recover the bodies of the deceased.

US Ultimatum and Regional Recovery Operations

On Saturday, the American leader issued a two-day demand to the militant group. “They is going to have to begin handing over the bodies of the deceased hostages, which include two Americans, promptly, or the other countries participating in this significant truce will take action,” he posted on his social‑media platform.

When the 48-hour deadline neared, the group, joined by the Red Cross, joined teams from Egypt, who were granted permission by Israeli authorities to look for bodies beyond the boundary indicating the Israeli military’s pullback inside Gaza. An official representative said the delegation would use excavator machines and trucks in the search.

Official Confirmation and Press Reports

The news was corroborated by an unnamed Israeli official, who told local press that members of the group had been permitted to enter sections of Gaza under Israel Defense Forces (IDF) control to look for the bodies of captives, alongside Egyptian and ICRC personnel.

“To achieve this goal, representatives were allowed to pass the designated boundary,” the official was cited as stating.

Footage released by a media outlet appeared to show members of a specialized group – belonging to the organization’s armed faction responsible for guarding captives – accompanying a Red Cross vehicle in a specific location close to Rafah, which is beyond Israeli military control.

Challenges in Finding Hostage Bodies

The search for the remains of Israeli hostages has turned into one of the most sensitive matters in the truce reached between the two sides. Yet, the effort to locate the remains has proved challenging from the outset, given the presence of an estimated enormous amount of debris across the strip, where, according to local health authorities, at least 10,000 residents are listed as missing, buried under the rubble.

Conflicting Statements on Body Whereabouts

The group has stated it lacks information on the exact locations of all the remains, saying it has been unable to communicate with several of its teams that had been holding the hostages and were allegedly eliminated during Israeli bombardments.

However, an Israeli government spokesperson claimed that the organization knew the whereabouts of the bodies. “If Hamas made more of an effort, they would be able to retrieve the remains of our hostages,” the official said.

American Position and Weapons Surrender Talks

While the US president has conceded that some of the remains are difficult to reach, he said that “the rest they can return immediately and, for some reason, they are failing to do so.”

“It may have to do with the disarming of Hamas,” he noted.

Washington has said it has obtained guarantees from Hamas that the group will disarm, though no specific schedule has been set. The militant organisation remains hesitant to give up its weapons without solid assurances about the fate of its members.
