Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Eric Adams has announced his decision to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, even after months of public tension between the pair of Democrats.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations

Only weeks ago, Adams had lashed out at Cuomo, labeling him a “snake and a liar” and alleging of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Yet, in a new statement, Adams changed his position, revealing he now plans to campaign alongside Cuomo in areas where he holds strong support.

“I think that it is imperative to energize the Black and brown communities that have suffered from urban displacement on how important this race is,” the mayor stated.

The mayor further explained, “They have watched their rents increase due to gentrification and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with organizers and groups and I will appear with the governor in those areas and get them engaged.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the struggle between Cuomo and progressive candidate his main rival, whose growing support has made headlines worldwide and represented aspirations for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democratic party.

In a recent candidate forum, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would decline Adams’s endorsement if extended.

Months ago, the mayor had launched his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on legal accusations which were later thrown out in return for his assistance with federal immigration raids across New York City.

During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, Adams answered journalists asking about the support announcement by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”

This development followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ first game at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a contentious mayoral debate.
